The problem is worse for denim. The innovation of denim, denim influencers, and denim brands continues to grow. Keeping up is getting tougher and tougher every day. Below, in 2019, we break down the patterns most recommended for denim. -style is graded according to the number of times it appears on a “trend list for 2019.” We have analyzed Google searches for each topic, showing how people think about a phenomenon every day. Further searches= further value, in other words.
Straight Leg Jeans
Eighteen out of thirty articles discussed this phenomenon–in addition, almost every review we read was heading towards a wider arm. The most mentions are straight leg jeans of all the “wide leg” types (think flares, culottes, etc.). The low cut straight-leg jean enjoyed was the straight-leg jean’s most common variant. We’ve seen plenty of trendy celebrities rock this look since 2017, so it’s no wonder it’s top of the list. Search Trend–Since 2004, searches for “straight leg” jeans have increased. Even at their most famous skinny jeans (in 2009), searches for straight jeans in the legs rose. Over the past year, more than ever, shoppers have been hunting for straight leg jeans.
Wide Leg Jeans
16 out of 30 reports referred to as wide-leg jeans, making it the second most suggested phenomenon in 2019. It is worth noting that there was no consensus on wide-leg jean’s “style.” Several editors recommended strong prudence, several recommended low prudence, and more. Search Trend In November 2018, searches for wide-leg jeans peaked. This style has a lot of legitimate value (not just the hysteria of the editor). Ironically, most searches for large leg jeans were made in 2007. With JNCO’s sad exit— among other losses— around 2015 searches for wide-leg jeans bottomed out.
Stripped Jeans
Some variation of jeans with “stripes” from pintucks to ribbon hem was reported in 14 of 30 papers. Under the umbrella of stripes, we incorporated these concepts. Find Trend Searches for “striped jeans” peaked at the end of 2018, doubling from the end of 2017. That said, searches for similar terms such as pintuck jeans and ribbon jeans have been lower than any other year in 2018. (As a reminder, the quest for the word “pintuck” has risen, indicating that at least people were interested in finding out what it means.)
Embroided/Patched Denim
12 Of the 30 things referred to as embroidery or patching. All embroidery and patching work on top of the denim as “extra,” so we wanted to band them together. This was a very popular choice among high-end fashion bloggers, who noted both NYFW and PFW’s patched and broken look. Search pattern patching and embroidery-related searches reached their peak in early 2017. I think that this pattern has been stated by the launch of “denim guides” for that year, including 2018. Interest in patched denim has a peak and valley impact that coincides with each year’s start. In NY and California, both types are also much more common than any other country.
